Middle School Reimagined at ASA
Create. Discover. Explore.
Middle school should be a place where students do more than complete assignments. It should be a place where they investigate meaningful questions, create original work, solve problems, and discover what they are capable of achieving.
Art & Science Academy is launching an expanded project-based learning initiative designed to make learning more engaging, connected, and relevant for middle school students.
Learning Through Real-World Projects
Through project-based learning, students explore meaningful questions and challenges over an extended period of time. They apply skills from multiple subject areas as they research, collaborate, design, build, write, present, and reflect.
Rather than learning every subject in isolation, students see how science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics, language arts, and social studies connect to one another—and to the world beyond the classroom.
Students may:
- Investigate real-world scientific and community issues
- Design and test solutions to authentic problems
- Create models, artwork, performances, presentations, and written products
- Work independently and collaboratively
- Share their learning with families and community members
- Reflect on their progress and revise their work
Students continue to receive instruction in essential academic standards and foundational skills. Project-based learning gives them meaningful opportunities to apply those skills.
Art and Science at the Center
Art and science are not occasional additions at ASA—they are central to how students learn, create, and explore.
Middle school students participate in art- and science-focused electives that allow them to discover new interests and develop their talents. These experiences complement classroom instruction and project-based learning by providing additional opportunities for creativity, experimentation, design, performance, and hands-on discovery.
Agriculture in the Classroom also helps students explore connections among science, food systems, natural resources, the environment, technology, and Minnesota agriculture.
A New Middle School Learning Experience
ASA’s middle school program is intentionally designed around the needs of students during this important stage of development.
The program includes:
- Extended learning blocks that allow students to explore topics in greater depth
- Integrated STEM and humanities learning experiences
- Hands-on projects connected to art, science, agriculture, and the community
- Art- and science-focused electives
- Agriculture in the Classroom experiences
- Opportunities for student voice, choice, creativity, and leadership
- Small classes and personalized support
- Clear academic and behavioral expectations
- Strong relationships with teachers who know each student
Explore Through Middle School Electives
Creativity, discovery, and student choice are built into the school day at ASA. Middle school students participate in electives that allow them to explore their interests, develop new skills, and discover new talents.
Elective opportunities include:
- Dance
- Theater
- Instrumental music
- Vocal music
- Science Club
- Agriculture in the Classroom
- Additional art- and science-focused experiences based on student interest
These electives give students more ways to create, perform, experiment, collaborate, and belong—all as part of their regular school-day experience.
Why Project-Based Learning?
Project-based learning helps students develop the academic knowledge and life skills they will need in high school, college, careers, and their communities.
Students strengthen their ability to:
- Think critically and solve problems
- Communicate ideas clearly
- Collaborate with others
- Manage time and responsibilities
- Use feedback to improve their work
- Demonstrate creativity and curiosity
- Apply learning in new situations
- Take ownership of their growth
The Advantages of a Small Middle School
Middle school students need both growing independence and dependable support. ASA offers the personal attention of a small-school community where students are known, valued, and encouraged to participate.
At ASA, students are not just another name on a class list. Teachers can recognize individual strengths, identify challenges early, and help students build the confidence and skills needed for future success.
A Place to Be Curious, Be Creative, Belong, and Learn
ASA’s middle school combines rigorous academics, creative exploration, hands-on learning, enrichment opportunities, and meaningful relationships.
Students are encouraged to ask questions, try new ideas, learn from mistakes, and contribute to their school community. Whether a student is an artist, scientist, musician, performer, builder, writer, problem-solver—or is still discovering their interests—there is a place for them at ASA.
