Elementary School at ASA
A Strong Start. A Caring Community. A Place to Belong.
The elementary years build the foundation for a child’s future. At Art & Science Academy, students receive strong academic instruction, meaningful hands-on learning experiences, and personalized support within a caring, family-centered school community.
With class sizes capped at 25 students, our highly effective teachers get to know each child as a learner and as an individual. Families can expect caring relationships, consistent communication, and a school team committed to helping every student learn and grow.
Strong, Research-Based Curriculum
ASA uses high-quality instructional programs to develop confident readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, artists, and problem-solvers.
Literacy
Our literacy instruction combines knowledge-building, high-quality texts, structured phonics, vocabulary development, writing, and word study.
- Open Up Resources – EL Education K–8 Language Arts helps students build knowledge while becoming strong readers, writers, speakers, and thinkers.
- UFLI Foundations provides explicit, systematic instruction in foundational reading skills, including phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, spelling, and reading fluency.
- Morphology instruction teaches students how meaningful word parts—including roots, prefixes, and suffixes—work together. This strengthens vocabulary, spelling, decoding, and comprehension.
Mathematics
ASA’s mathematics instruction balances deep conceptual understanding, problem-solving, hands-on learning, and essential math fact fluency.
- Eureka Math² helps students understand not only how to solve a problem, but why mathematical concepts and strategies work.
- Rocket Math provides focused practice that helps students develop accuracy, confidence, and fluency with essential math facts.
Social-Emotional Learning
Students learn best when they feel safe, supported, and connected. ASA uses the Be Good People curriculum to help students develop self-awareness, empathy, relationship skills, responsible decision-making, and positive ways to navigate challenges.
Hands-On Art, Science, and STEAM
Art and science are at the center of the ASA experience. Students are encouraged to ask questions, investigate ideas, create original work, and learn through meaningful hands-on experiences.
Elementary students participate in:
- PE every other school day
- STEAM every other school day
- Art- and science-integrated classroom learning
- Hands-on experiments, building, designing, and problem-solving
- Creative projects and performance opportunities
- 30 minutes of recess every day
These experiences help students remain active, curious, creative, and engaged throughout the school day.
Small Classes and Highly Effective Teachers
Elementary class sizes are capped at 25 students. Smaller classes allow teachers to build strong relationships, understand each student’s strengths and needs, provide meaningful feedback, and respond when additional support or challenge is needed.
Our teachers combine strong instruction with patience, encouragement, and high expectations. They create classrooms where students feel safe taking risks, asking questions, making mistakes, and growing.
Support for Every Learner
ASA provides a strong system of academic and social-emotional support through Title I and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support, or MTSS.
Teachers regularly review student progress and work together to identify students who may benefit from additional instruction, practice, enrichment, or intervention. Supports may include:
- Small-group reading or mathematics instruction
- Targeted skill development
- Regular progress monitoring
- Collaborative problem-solving among teachers and support staff
- Additional academic and social-emotional interventions
- Communication and partnership with families
Our goal is to respond early, provide the right level of support, and help every student experience growth and success.
Strong School–Family Partnerships
Families are important members of the ASA community. We value open, consistent communication and work to build trusting partnerships between families and school staff.
Families can expect:
- Regular classroom and school communication

- Opportunities to participate in school activities
