The Arts

ASA provides a high quality art program and art integration opportunities in an innovative small school community.

ASA’s Arts Philosophy

At Art and Science Academy, we embrace arts integration as a dynamic teaching approach that combines academic content with artistic expression. This method helps deepen student understanding, increase engagement, and cater to diverse learning styles by integrating dance, music, visual arts, theater, and media arts into everyday learning.

Arts integration connects academic subjects with the arts in meaningful ways, ensuring that both are taught and assessed equitably. Key principles include:

  • Authentic Connections: The arts are woven directly into academic content, not an afterthought.
  • Balancing Learning: Both the academic subject and art form are equally emphasized.
  • Collaboration: Teachers work together to create cross-disciplinary lessons.
  • Process & Product: We value both the creative process and the final outcome.
  • Inclusivity: Arts integration is accessible to all students, regardless of artistic ability.

Studies show that arts integration leads to deeper understanding of subjects, increased student engagement, and support for diverse learning styles. It’s a powerful tool for creating motivated, creative learners who excel academically and personally.

About Us

Visual Arts

Through our visual arts curriculum, students engage in a variety of creative experiences, from drawing and painting, to clay sculpting, wheel throwing, digital art, and crafting formal written artist statements. They also have the opportunity to showcase their work through art exhibitions throughout the school year and digital portfolios, gaining confidence and pride in their artistic growth.

At Art and Science Academy Middle School, our visual arts courses go beyond simply creating artwork—they are the next step in students’ journey of artistic discovery and personal expression. We believe that art classes should meet students where they are, providing the support and collaboration needed to grow their skills while encouraging exploration of various materials and techniques. Our ultimate goal is to guide students in moving past the creation of standard cookie-cutter pieces and towards the development of meaningful, expressive works that communicate a deeper message.

About Us

Music

In music we sing, dance, play instruments, and have lots of fun while learning about music! All elementary students will have classroom music once in a four day rotating schedule. Classroom music curriculum is based on the Minnesota state music standards, and also incorporates pedagogy for successful learning.

Our middle school band students practice in small classes and groups several times a week.

About Us

Performing Arts

This department offers electives including Dance, Vocal Music and Theater. Through creative expression, our students explore the world around them and learn to use music and literature as a tool for their social, emotional and physical health. Our program caters to students of all ability levels with a focus on project based and hands on learning. Whether your student is ready to take the stage or build it, to dance to their heart’s content or find their musical outlet through vocal performance, we have a program to help develop those skills and explore those interests.

ASA has partnered with DeGamba School of Music and Art to enhance our program while offering students a seamless transition into extra-curricular opportunities that are accessible to families.
